What are the formatting standards for legal briefs filed in New York State courts?

Answer

Statewide formatting standards are set forth in the NYS Law Reporting Bureau Style Manual, various places in the NY Civil Practice Law and Rules, e.g. §§2101 (papers in general) and 5526-5529 (appeals), 22 N.Y. Comp. Codes R. & Regs. §500.1 et seq. (Court of Appeals), 22 NYCRR §1250.1 et seq. (appellate divisions), and 22 NYCRR §202.8-a(a) et seq. (trial courts), as well as various other places in Title 22 of the Administrative Rules of the Unified Court System & Uniform Rules of the Trial Courts ("Uniform Rules"). But within the NYS Unified Court System, particular appellate divisions and trial courts have their own formatting standards, set forth in the Uniform Rules and/or on their respective websites, e.g., 2d Dept. Glossary of Terms for Formatting Computer-Generated Briefs. Individual judges may also have their own style and formatting standards, set forth in their individual rules, e.g., Kings Civil Term Judges' Rules - 2JD Supreme Civil | NYCOURTS.GOV.
