What laws apply to consumer debt collection?
Answer
Federal, state, and local laws may apply to debt collection procedures. Court Help and the links below can help identify pertinent laws and resources. In public access law libraries, read in New York Jurisprudence, 2d, "Creditors' Rights and Remedies for laws on permitted and prohibited debt collection practices. NY Court Help has two sections When You Owe Money (Debtor) and When Someone Owes You Money which explain all the basic steps involved in debt collection. The Civil Legal Advice and Resource Office also offers assistance to consumers who are being sued for bad debt. See ClaroNYC.org.
